Author & "Anti-Scam Samurai" Expert Announces Release Of Book on Top 10 Email Scams

[ San Francisco, CA August 17, 2012 ] Self-described "Anti-Scam Samurai" expert and author Kathleen McMahon has announced the release of 'Top 10 Email Scams', the first volume in a series of books on how to recognize and avoid today's Internet scams.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center reported over 300,000 complaints totaling an astounding $485.3 million financial loss to online scammers in 2011.

"I get emails every day from people who have become a victim of an online scammer," stated Ms. McMahon, "and it's hard for the authorities to catch these criminals. I realized one way to fight back was to use the Internet to help educate people so they don't become a victim in the first place. There are more victims today than ever before. This problem is not going away."

Online scams look to take advantage of what people will find believable, like the scam during a heat wave or cold snap, where victims are being told there is an Obama bailout program to pay their utilities. Another example are the online jobs for a "payroll assistant" or "shipping clerk" that end up being nothing more than moving around stolen goods and money for a scammer. Or the email that appears to be coming from the FBI saying a dangerous virus has been identified on the user's computer and they need to pay a fee to have it removed. Of course the FBI is sending no such emails.

"All Internet scams have certain red flags that are telltale signs," continued Ms. McMahon, "and once you know these signs, it becomes easier to identify when an email is a scam and when it is not. Then you can read your email and use places like Craigslist, eBay and Facebook with more confidence."

One small business owner wrote to Kathleen and said, "Thank you so much for all your work, we almost fell for the 'Fake Buyer Scam' and could not tell if the inquiry was legitimate or not. Now we know it is not and you saved us from losing a lot of money. Keep up the good work."

Kathleen McMahon is available for media interviews or to come speak to your group about staying safe while using the Internet. She can be reached using the information below. The paperback version of 'Top 10 Email Scams' is available on Amazon. The ebook version is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, as well as her website at KTMObooks.com.
